The word “tithe” is rooted in the Old English “teogoþa,” meaning “tenth.” Historically, it refers to giving one-tenth of one’s income to religious institutions—a tradition dating back to biblical times. In America, as churches became financially independent in the 1800s, the use of envelopes became a popular tool to discreetly manage offerings, transforming what was once a handshake or handshake with cash into a structured, traceable gift.
In small towns across early 20th-century America, the Sunday morning ritual was more than just worship—it was a time for community giving. But not every donor wanted their offering to be visible or public.
So churches came up with a solution: the tithe envelope. A little white paper pouch that fit into every coat pocket or purse, it became a modest hero of the Sunday service. Families often had their children write their names on the envelopes, learning from a young age the joy of giving. Some even drew pictures on the back.
One rural church in Kentucky still tells the story of “Grandpa Samuel,” who never missed a Sunday and always placed his envelope gently in the plate—folded precisely in half, his initials written in perfect cursive. His family later donated a small box of his unused envelopes to the church museum, each one a time capsule of quiet generosity.
Today, when you print tithe envelopes, you’re continuing that legacy—a tradition of faith, stewardship, and meaningful connection.
