Standard paper is made from wood pulp, which absorbs liquid instantly. One rainstorm on a job site, one spill in a kitchen, one morning on a boat — and your booklet is ruined. Synthetic paper is made from polyester resin, extruded into sheets that look and feel like high-quality paper but behave like plastic. Water beads off. Ink stays put. Pages don't soften or tear.
We use polyester-based synthetic sheets — the most print-stable synthetic available. Unlike polypropylene (YUPO-style) or cheaper cavitated films, polyester holds toner with exceptional adhesion and delivers color accuracy that rivals standard coated paper. The waterproof property is built into the material itself — not a coating on top.
Polyester doesn't absorb water. Protection comes from the material itself — no laminate film, no sealed edges, nothing to peel or delaminate over time.
The plastic matrix resists tearing even when wet, folded roughly, or pulled at a corner. Pages won't fray or degrade after hundreds of page turns.
Wipe pages with a damp cloth, soap and water, disinfectant wipes, or isopropyl alcohol. The surface cleans instantly — essential for food service and healthcare field use.
The smooth polyester surface produces full-color prints with sharp detail and accurate color — equal to or better than standard coated paper on most digital presses.
Synthetic paper protects the substrate — pages won't absorb water. UV coating adds a clear protective layer over the printed ink itself, preventing scuffing, grease penetration, and the effects of harsh cleaning agents. Best for booklets wiped down multiple times daily — commercial kitchen manuals, healthcare protocols, marine safety guides, or any booklet exposed to solvents. Currently available as a custom quote option.

Bottom line: Lamination was the standard before synthetic paper existed. For multi-page field booklets, synthetic paper produces a thinner, lighter, more durable result at lower cost — and handles high page counts without becoming a thick, heavy brick.
If your team works in the field, near water, in commercial kitchens, or in environments where documents get handled roughly — this product was built for you.
Electrical grid crews, pipeline repair teams, and infrastructure workers need procedure booklets they can pull from a truck in the rain.
Navigation aids, safety procedure booklets, dock operations guides, and vessel checklists live in environments that are permanently damp.
Geologists, ecologists, hydrologists, and surveyors document findings under all conditions. Reference guides need to survive the work.
Safety training materials, equipment operation manuals, and quality control checklists need to survive contact with grease, oil, and water.
Home health workers and emergency responders need protocols that can be sanitized with disinfectant wipes between patients.
For restaurants with 4, 6, 8, or more menu pages — coil-bound synthetic menus lay flat, survive spills, and wipe clean after every service.
Single-sheet menus → separate product
Race day course guides, trail maps, outdoor festival programs, and adventure tourism booklets are handed to participants who spend the day outside.
First responders rely on quick-reference guides in crisis conditions — legible after being dropped in water, exposed to weather, or handled with wet gloves.
Synthetic paper is measured in mil (thousandths of an inch) — not pounds like regular paper. Thicker mil = stiffer, more rigid sheet.
Best for high-page-count booklets (60–100 pages). Use for interior pages only — semi-transparent when held to light.
Go-to for interior pages. Opaque, substantial feel, turns easily. Works well for field manuals and training guides up to 60 pages.
Standard cover choice. Noticeable stiffness upgrade. Can also be used for all pages on shorter booklets (under 30 pages).
Maximum rigidity. Best for covers on booklets that live in truck cabs, tool bags, or any environment with regular rough handling.

| Size | Pages | Paper | Weight | 10 booklets |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5.5×8.5 | 24 | 5pt | 4.2 oz | 2.6 lb |
| 8.5×11 | 24 | 5pt | 7.4 oz | 4.6 lb |
| 8.5×11 | 24 | 8pt | 9.3 oz | 5.8 lb |
| 8.5×11 | 32 | 8pt | 11.5 oz | 7.2 lb |
For high page-count field booklets carried by personnel, consider 5pt paper to reduce weight — but always use a thicker cover. The 5pt sheet is still fully waterproof and tear-proof.
Synthetic plastic sheets resist folding — ruling out saddle-stitch booklets. Perfect binding requires glue that doesn't hold reliably on plastic. Coil binding threads mechanically through punched holes — no folding, no glue.
All interior pages, covers, and optional clear front / black back covers are printed full-color and assembled in sequence. Double-sided printing is standard.
A heavy-duty punch creates evenly-spaced round holes (approx. 5/32") along the binding edge at 4:1 pitch. Minimum live content margin: 0.5" from the binding edge.
The plastic coil threads through all punched holes, then is crimped on both ends. Result: 360° page rotation and fully flat lay-open at any page.

Regular paper is wood pulp — it absorbs water because the fibers are porous. Synthetic paper is made from polyester resin, which is a plastic. Plastic doesn't absorb water; it repels it. The waterproof property is part of the material itself — not a coating applied over regular paper. There are no edges to delaminate, no film to peel, no way for water to get into the substrate. The ink, however, is not inherently waterproof — for applications involving harsh cleaning chemicals, UV coating provides an extra layer of ink protection.
Yes — the polyester surface handles all of the following safely:
For booklets wiped with strong solvents or harsh industrial cleaners daily, UV coating adds a protective layer over the printed ink. Ask us about this option when requesting your quote.
Synthetic plastic sheets resist folding. Saddle-stitch booklets require pages folded in half at the spine — synthetic paper won't accept that fold cleanly. Perfect binding requires adhesive glue on the spine, and most adhesives don't hold reliably on a plastic surface. Coil binding threads through punched holes and crimps mechanically — no folding, no glue. It works with plastic sheets at any page count, allows 360° page rotation, and lays completely flat when open.
For most field manuals with 20–60 pages, the standard configuration is:
For 80–100 page booklets, consider 5 mil interior pages to reduce weight — but always use a thicker cover. The 5 mil sheet is semi-transparent and only appropriate for interior pages.

Yes. We can add up to 5 custom-printed tabs on the 11" side of the booklet — useful for training manuals and reference guides with multiple sections. This is a custom add-on not yet in the online calculator. Call us at 1-877-421-0668 to include tabs in your quote.

Standard turnaround options appear in the calculator when you configure your job.
We recommend adding them for booklets in rough environments — truck cabs, tool bags, marine vessels, outdoor packs. The clear polypropylene front protects your printed cover from scratches without hiding the artwork. The black vinyl back provides a rigid backing that prevents the booklet from bowing. Both are selectable in the calculator and meaningfully extend the working life of the booklet.
