9 x 12 Large Envelopes (Custom Envelope Printing)
A 9" × 12" envelope is the standard choice when you need to mail letter-size documents flat, unfolded, and looking the way you printed them. Also known as a large envelope or "flat" in USPS terms, the 9x12 envelope is the workhorse of professional mail — contracts, certificates, proposals, resumes, transcripts, marketing packets. If it's 8.5" × 11" and it matters how it arrives, this is the envelope you want.

Why most businesses choose a 9" × 12" envelope
A standard #10 business envelope forces you to fold a letter-size sheet into thirds. That's fine for an invoice. It's not fine for a contract you want to look professional, a glossy proposal you spent hours designing, or a certificate that should arrive without a crease across the recipient's name. The 9" × 12" envelope solves that — your document slides in flat, exactly the way you printed it.
There are so many documents we need to keep safe or keep together — where we can't afford to lose a sheet, mix them up, or let them arrive bent. Contracts get saved for the record and folding risks deterioration over time. Trade show catalogs and brochures handed out in an envelope help the visitor see the whole picture at once. Magazines, newsletters, price lists, and thick stacks of paper all travel better in a 9" × 12" envelope than in a bulky, expensive box — a single cardstock sheet added inside is often all the extra stiffness you need.
"Envelope design is theater in print. Large-format envelopes carry added importance purely because of their size — hard to toss them out without at least a peek."
— George Duncan, author of Streetwise Direct Marketing, on why major consumer marketers often launch new products in 9" × 12" envelopes before testing smaller formats.
Three examples from our actual customers
Mails 250 listing packets to a target neighborhood every quarter. Each envelope holds a printed flyer, a one-page market report, and her business card — all letter-size. Her logo is printed on the front of the envelope, so the brand impression starts before the homeowner even opens it.
Sends 800 annual reports to donors. Each envelope contains a stapled 8-page report plus a personalized thank-you letter. They use variable data printing so every donor's name and address is printed directly on the envelope — no labels, no hand-addressing.
Mails signed contracts and disclosure documents that can't be folded for legal recordkeeping. They order catalog-style envelopes so the paralegal can load them from the top in batches, and choose peel and seal instead of moistening flaps for faster processing.
Booklet vs. Catalog vs. Peel & Seal — which one do you need?
All three are 9" × 12" on the outside. The difference is where the opening is and how it closes. The booklet and catalog styles both use a pre-glued folding flap that you activate with moisture; the peel and seal uses a self-adhesive strip instead.
⚠️ Not to be confused with a #12 envelope
A 9" × 12" envelope (what this page is about) is a large envelope that holds letter-size documents flat. It measures 9 inches by 12 inches.
A #12 envelope is a small business envelope measuring 4-3/4" × 11", used for longer letters or mailing invoices — part of the same size family as a #10 business envelope.

📮 How much postage does a 9" × 12" envelope need?
This is the question we get asked most about 9" × 12" envelopes — and the answer surprises a lot of first-time mailers.
A 9" × 12" envelope is classified by USPS as a large envelope (also called a "flat"), not a regular letter. It uses a different, higher postage rate than a #10 business envelope — one Forever stamp is not enough.
A typical 9" × 12" envelope holding 5 to 10 sheets of paper weighs 2 to 3 ounces, which puts postage in the $1.90 to $2.20 range. The envelope must stay rectangular, flexible, and uniformly thick, otherwise USPS adds a non-machinable surcharge. Current rates and weight tiers are on the USPS First-Class Mail page.
Can I use cheaper commercial rates? First-Class vs. Marketing Mail
If you're mailing in volume, USPS offers two main classes of service for 9" × 12" flats — and choosing the wrong one can get your mail rejected, returned, or surcharged.
Use it for: invoices, statements, bills, contracts, account notices, medical records, personal letters, appointment reminders with account details.
Trade-off: Faster delivery, more expensive per piece.
Use it for: catalogs, brochures, announcements, general marketing offers. Minimum 200 pieces (or 50 lbs) to qualify.
Trade-off: Cheaper per piece, slower and less predictable delivery.
⚠️ Critical rule: Marketing Mail cannot contain personalized transactional content. If your envelope includes a specific invoice amount, account number, statement, bill, or similar personal financial information, USPS requires First-Class Mail. Violations can result in short-paid postage charges or refused mail. When in doubt, ask us before you order.
💡 Quick tip: Always weigh the finished, stuffed envelope on a kitchen scale before applying postage. Underpaying means USPS returns your mail or delivers it postage-due. For hundreds of pieces, ask about Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM) — often much cheaper for whole-neighborhood campaigns.
What fits inside a 9" × 12" envelope
Up to ~25-30 sheets of 20 lb paper
Flat, for recordkeeping
Stapled or loose
Flyer + report + business card
Shown flat and unfolded
Also price lists, catalogs
Letter + catalog + card in one
Transcripts, academic records
📦 Need to send something thicker, or with a presentation folder? Step up to a 10" × 13" envelope — the extra inch on each side gives you room for folders, binder clips, and bulkier inserts, and reduces the stress on the envelope seams from overstuffing.
🏥 Mailing medical records and sensitive documents
Medical offices, clinics, billing departments, and healthcare nonprofits regularly use 9" × 12" envelopes to mail patient records, intake forms, consent documents, and insurance paperwork flat — without folding. Keeping these documents uncreased is more than cosmetic: many forms include barcodes, signature fields, and scanning areas that lose reliability the moment a sheet is folded through them.
⚠️ Important disclaimer about HIPAA compliance
Our standard 9" × 12" envelopes are printed on 28 lb white wove stock and are not sold as HIPAA-compliant medical envelopes.
If your project requires envelopes specifically engineered for HIPAA-compliant mailing — opaque security-tint stock, tamper-evident closures, or stock tested for medical mailing workflows — please contact us directly. We can source specialty medical and privacy envelopes for your project alongside the rest of your printing order.

❓ Frequently asked questions
What size is a 9" × 12" envelope?
The exterior measures 9 inches by 12 inches. It holds standard 8.5" × 11" letter-size documents flat, unfolded. It is classified by USPS as a large envelope or "flat."
How many stamps do I need for a 9" × 12" envelope?
A 9" × 12" envelope mails as a USPS large envelope, which starts at $1.63 for the first ounce as of January 2026. One Forever stamp ($0.78) is not enough — you'd need at least three Forever stamps ($2.34) for a 2-ounce envelope, but you'd be overpaying. Buying a single-rate stamp at the post office or weighing the envelope and printing exact postage online is more cost-effective.
How much does it cost to mail a 9" × 12" envelope?
USPS First-Class Mail large envelope rates start at $1.63 for 1 ounce in January 2026, with each additional ounce adding to the cost up to a 13-ounce maximum. A typical 9" × 12" envelope with 5 to 10 sheets of paper weighs 2 to 3 ounces and costs roughly $1.90 to $2.20 to mail. Always weigh the finished envelope on a scale before applying postage. See USPS rates.
Can I use cheaper USPS Marketing Mail rates for my 9" × 12" envelopes?
Sometimes — but only for non-personalized promotional content in bulk (minimum 200 pieces). USPS Marketing Mail cannot be used for personalized transactional content such as invoices, statements, bills, contracts, account notices, or medical records. If your mailing contains account numbers, dollar amounts, or personal financial information, USPS requires First-Class Mail, not Marketing Mail. When in doubt, ask us before you order.
Are your 9" × 12" envelopes HIPAA compliant for mailing medical records?
Our standard 9" × 12" envelopes are printed on 28 lb white wove stock and are not sold as HIPAA-compliant medical envelopes. If your project requires HIPAA-compliant envelopes — such as opaque security-tint stock or tamper-evident closures — contact us directly and we can source specialty medical and privacy envelopes for your project.
What's the difference between a booklet envelope and a catalog envelope?
Booklet envelopes open on the long (12") side, like a book. Catalog envelopes open on the short (9") side, loaded from the top. Both are 9" × 12" externally — pick whichever matches how you want the recipient to pull your document out.
Will an 8.5" × 11" document fit flat in a 9" × 12" envelope?
Yes, that's exactly what these envelopes are designed for. The half-inch of space on each side gives you enough room to slide a letter-size document in cleanly without bending the corners.
Is a 9" × 12" envelope the same as a #12 envelope?
No. A 9" × 12" envelope is a large flat envelope that holds letter-size documents unfolded, measuring 9 inches by 12 inches. A #12 envelope is a small business envelope measuring 4-3/4" × 11", used for longer letters or mailing invoices. They are completely different sizes for completely different purposes.
What is the minimum order?
25 envelopes. There's no maximum — we print runs of any size from 25 up to 10,000.
Can I print 9" × 12" envelopes in full color?
Yes. You can choose black ink only or full color CMYK. Full bleed printing is not available for this product, so keep your design within a small white border.
Can I print a different recipient address on each envelope?
Yes. We offer variable data printing, which lets each envelope carry a different address, account number, or even a different image as part of the same job.
What paper are these envelopes printed on?
28 lb white wove envelope stock — the standard for professional business mailings. Sturdy enough to protect important documents and prints cleanly in both black and full color.
