Black & White Document Printing — Built for Real Business Jobs

Whether you need 50 single-sheet flyers for tomorrow or a 200-page bylaw mailing to 800 homeowners next week, black & white is the smartest way to print it well without overpaying. Every job runs on commercial digital presses at our Florida shop — where blacks come out genuinely black, not the washed-out gray of a tired office copier.

Scheduled production, not a walk-in counter

Every job enters our production schedule — even a single sheet.

Same-day printing is possible when files arrive by 11 AM Eastern and the schedule has room — but we are not a self-serve kiosk. If you need two copies in the next ten minutes, a FedEx Office or Staples counter will serve you faster. If you are planning a real print job and want it done by people who care how it looks, you are in the right place. Printing in South Florida since 1972.

Paper guide in plain language

Choosing paper is the difference between a flimsy throwaway and a document that feels professional. Here is each family in plain English — what it is, what it feels like, and what it is for.

20# bond (copy paper)
The standard office-copier weight. Light, smooth, single-sided only. Cheapest option — ideal for high-volume internal handouts and forms. Does not accept bleed.
24# bond
Slightly thicker, less see-through. Best for double-sided printing. Our most popular weight for forms, letters and manuals.
28# bond (premium uncoated)
Denser, more elegant feel. 96 brightness. Ideal for booklet inside pages, customer-facing documents and proposals.
32# premium uncoated
Top of the line uncoated. Heavy, smooth, professional — what you want for formal proposals, training materials and anything you would hate to see crumpled.
80# & 100# coated text
Smooth coated finish in gloss or matte. Black ink looks crisper and denser than on uncoated stock. Standard for restaurant menus, brochure interiors and premium handouts.
Cover stocks (80# – 16pt)
Heavy stock for booklet covers, postcards, business cards, announcement cards. 14pt and 16pt are the cardstock weights.
Linen finish
Textured upscale paper in solar white or natural white. Ideal for letterhead, formal invitations, condolence cards.
Pastel & bright colored
24# colored paper in pastel (blue, orchid, green, goldenrod, pink) and neon brights (solar yellow, re-entry red, pulsar pink, galaxy gold, terra green). Great for color-coding forms or making handouts impossible to ignore.
Important: 20# bond does not accept bleed. For edge-to-edge designs, choose 24# bond or heavier and select “Bleed” in the calculator.

Sizes guide — with use cases

Letter — 8.5″×11″
The default. Forms, handouts, manuals, letters, notices.
Legal — 8.5″×14″
Law firms, long contracts, deposition copies.
Tabloid — 11″×17″
Restaurant menus, large schedules, booklet spreads, oversized handouts.
Poster — 12″×18″
The largest cut from our digital press. Wall posters, classroom signage, event notices.
Half sheet — 8.5″×5.5″
Notepads, small flyers, half-page handouts.
Vertical half — 11″×4.25″
Tall, narrow format — table tents, bookmarks, hang tags.
Quarter sheet — 4.25″×5.5″
Smallest cut. Note cards, raffle tickets, prayer cards.
Third sheet — 8.5″×3.67″
Classic flyer-strip size — ideal for door-hanger promos.
A3 — 297×420 mm
International tabloid equivalent. For European-format documents and academic posters.
A4 — 210×297 mm
International letter equivalent. Required for documents that must match overseas standards.
A5 — 148×210 mm
International half-letter. Common for booklets, novellas, journals.

Finishing, mailing & variable data

Folding
Letter fold, half fold, Z fold, double-parallel fold — for brochures, bulletins, tri-fold menus and direct-mail letters.
Scoring
A pressed crease line that prevents heavier paper from cracking when folded. Always recommended on cover stock and 100# papers.
Stapling
Single upper-corner staple. For multi-sheet handouts, exam packets and short reports.
Hole drilling
3-hole for binders (the standard), 2-hole top for flip-pad use, 1-hole corner for hangtags.
Slip sheets
Separator sheets inserted between groups of copies — useful when shipping multiple distinct documents in one box.
Collating
Pages organized in reading order (1, 2, 3 — 1, 2, 3) or grouped by page number (1, 1, 1 — 2, 2, 2). Choose collated for finished sets, uncollated for stacks of identical pages.
Lamination
3 mil, 5 mil or 10 mil clear film — flush to the edge or with a plastic border. Protects menus, signs, frequently-handled documents.
Envelope insertion & mailing
For multi-piece campaigns we fold your printed pieces, insert them into envelopes, address them and drop them in the mail on your behalf — one workflow, one shop. Custom quote required because timing and postage depend on volume and destination.
Variable-data printing
Personalized names, addresses, account numbers or unit numbers on each printed piece. Ideal for HOA notices, membership renewals, donor appeals and tenant communications. Custom quote required — pricing depends on data complexity and volume.

Why our blacks are actually black

Office copiers and desktop laser printers are built for a different job than ours. They are optimized for occasional, low-volume convenience printing — where speed and toner economy matter more than density. Commercial digital presses like ours are built for production: calibrated daily, running fresh dense toner, and tuned so that solid blacks come out solid and fine text stays crisp at small point sizes, every page, every run.

How a single black ink reproduces the full grayscale

Black-and-white printing is not actually shades of gray — it is halftones. The press lays down tiny black dots in different densities. Packed close, your eye reads "dark gray." Spread apart, your eye reads "light gray." That is how a single black ink reproduces the entire grayscale, including photographs.

A single black ink can produce shades that range from deep black to white through halftone dot density

What happens when a color file is converted to black & white

When you submit a full-color file for B&W printing, the press converts each color into a brightness value — a position on the gray scale. Two very different colors can land on nearly the same brightness, which means they end up looking like the same gray on paper.

Different colors converted to grayscale: a light blue and an orange end up rendering nearly identical gray shades

The conversion in 3 steps:

1. Brightness read
Each colored area is measured for how light or dark it is — not what color it is.
2. Gray assigned
That brightness value is converted to a single shade of gray, from 0% (white) to 100% (black).
3. Look-alikes collide
A light blue and a medium orange may have the same brightness — so they print as the same gray, even though they look completely different in color.
Practical impact: If your design depends on color contrast to make a chart, a logo, or a comparison readable, that contrast may disappear in B&W. Send your file to us before ordering — we will preview the conversion and tell you whether it holds up, or whether you should redesign for grayscale or order in full color instead.

How we compare to Staples, FedEx Office, CVS & Walgreens

Honest answer first: for 1–10 quick copies on plain paper, those retail counters are fine and faster than us. They are walk-in operations with copiers behind the counter. We are a commercial printer with scheduled production. Here is how the offerings actually compare for the jobs we both technically can do.

Staples / Staples Print & Marketing
Best for: small same-day jobs at a counter. Limited paper choices, limited finishing, no envelope insertion or variable data. We win on: heavier papers, finishing options, multi-page binding, mailing fulfillment, larger volumes.
FedEx Office (formerly Kinko’s)
The closest competitor for medium jobs. Strong walk-in network, decent paper options. We win on: price on volume runs, broader cover-stock and linen options, A-series sizes, dedicated mailing fulfillment.
CVS / Walgreens photo counters
Built for photo prints and quick document copies on plain paper. No finishing, no cover stock, no binding. We win on: everything except walk-in speed for 1–10 copies.
Office Depot / OfficeMax Print & Copy
Similar profile to Staples. Counter-based, limited stock and finishing. We win on: the same things — complex jobs, mail house, variable data, professional paper choices.
Rule of thumb: if your job needs heavier paper than 24# bond, multi-page binding, mailing, variable data, or more than ~200 copies, you will get better quality and pricing from a commercial printer like us than from a retail counter.

Frequently asked questions

Black & white copies start at a few cents per page. The exact price depends on quantity, paper type, size, and whether you need single- or double-sided printing. Use the calculator above to see your real-time price — there are no hidden fees, and orders of $50 or more qualify for free ground shipping inside the U.S.

No. You can order anything from a single sheet up through the calculator's standard range. For very large or complex jobs, request a custom quote and we will reply with pricing and timeline.

Yes, when files are in by 11:00 AM Eastern, the job is under 1,000 impressions, and the production schedule has room. Standard turnaround is 4 business days; rush service is 1–2 business days. Turnaround covers production only — not shipping transit.

Important: we are not a walk-in counter. If you need 2 copies in the next 10 minutes, a FedEx Office or Staples counter will serve you faster.

Yes — the U.S. State Department accepts the passport application form (DS-11, DS-82) printed in black and white. The form itself only requires legible printing on white paper, single-sided, 8.5″×11″ standard letter size. However, your passport photo must still be in full color and meet specific size and quality requirements. We can print the application form for you in black and white, but for the photo we recommend a dedicated passport-photo service.

Yes — this is one of our specialties. Multi-page documents (50, 100, 200+ pages) printed in volumes of hundreds or thousands, with binding, envelope insertion and mailing, are exactly the kind of work our shop is built for. For jobs of that complexity, request a custom quote rather than using the calculator. We will reply with pricing, timeline, and production options.

Yes. Variable-data printing personalizes each piece with a different name, address, account number or unit number. It is the standard for HOA notices ("Dear Unit 4B"), membership renewals ("Your renewal expires June 30"), and donor appeals. Send us your data file (CSV or Excel) along with your design and we will quote the job — pricing depends on data complexity and volume.

Yes — for multi-piece campaigns we handle the entire workflow: print, fold, insert into envelopes, address, and drop in the mail. You provide the document and the recipient list; we do the rest. This is ideal for HOA mailings, tenant notices, membership renewal campaigns, and direct-mail letters. Mail-house jobs require a custom quote because pricing depends on volume, postage class and destination.

Print-ready PDF is best because it preserves fonts, layout and image quality. We also accept JPG, PNG, AI, PSD, INDD and DOCX. For best results, set images to 300 DPI and convert text to outlines if you used unusual fonts. See our PDF preparation guide for the full checklist.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. When color files are converted to grayscale, every color is reassigned a brightness value. Two very different colors (a light blue and an orange, for example) can come out looking like the same gray. See the 3-step explanation of how color converts to black & white further up the page for the full breakdown.

If your design depends on color contrast, either redesign it for grayscale or order it in full color instead. Call us before ordering if you are unsure — we will preview the conversion and tell you if your design will hold up.

Short answer: a speck of color makes the whole job a color job.

If your file contains any color — even a single colored character, a logo with a tinted accent, or a small icon — the entire page must run through our color press, and the entire job is priced as full color. There is no way for the press to charge differently for the colored pixels versus the black ones; it processes the page as a whole.

Two ways forward:

  • Convert the color to black in your design file before sending it — then we can print it as a true black & white job at B&W pricing. Easiest fix for most documents.
  • Request a custom quote for hybrid jobs where some pages are full color and others are pure B&W (for example, a 200-page training manual with a color cover and B&W interior). We can split the production and price each section appropriately, but this requires manual setup — the calculator cannot do it automatically.

If you are unsure whether your file has hidden color elements, send it to us and we will check before quoting.

Kinko's is no longer an active U.S. brand — the chain was acquired by FedEx in 2004 and rebranded as FedEx Office. If you are searching for "Kinko's near me," FedEx Office locations are the modern equivalent. For a side-by-side comparison of how our service differs from FedEx Office and other retail print counters, see the comparison section above.
