New York harbor was visited by Verrazano in 1524, and the Hudson River was first explored by Henry Hudson in 1609. The Dutch settled here permanently in 1624 and for 40 years they ruled over the colony of New Netherland. It was conquered by the English in 1664 and was then named New York in honor of the Duke of York.

Brooklyn 1646, the Village of Breuckelen was authorized by the Dutch West India Company and became the first municipality in what is now New York State (the predecessors of the Cities of Albany and New York were numbers two and three, respectively). In 1683, almost 20 years after the English kicked out the Dutch (1664), the General Assembly of Freeholders reorganized the governmental structure in all of the province of New York into 12 counties, each of which was sub-divided into towns. Brooklyn was one of the original six towns of Kings County, an original county when the county/town system was established in 1683. Other local area original counties were New York, Richmond, Queens, Westchester and Suffolk.

Bronx County is one of the five counties (boroughs) that comrpise the City of New York.  Bronx County (or "The Bronx", as it is commonly called) is the northernmost county in New York City is across the Harlem River from Manhattan.  It also lies across the East River from Queens.  The Bronx is the home of such notables as Babe Ruth, Derek Jeter, Roger Clemens, Edgar Allen Poe and my great grandfather, William Howland Pettys.  At one time, the Bronx was all farmland owned by a family named Bronks.  The wealthy would travel to visit the Bronks family, and would simply say that they were going to the Bronks', and the name stuck.
